Things you should have and know by 30…

This year I turned 27 and while I still like to think that’s pretty young and not that close to 30 apparently a lot of people like to give me crap about it…(thanks guys!). So I’ve been doing some thinking about what I want to do with my life etc…a love my job right now, but I did always want to go back to school; I want to get a new car and I’ve been thinking about buying a townhouse or even just a small house; what do I really want?…etc…you know those kinds of things. I mean I’ve been out of school for a while, and I’m not that young anymore…I’m single…so I would like to have some things settled…know who I am…all that great stuff. But I like to think I’m not “old”.

I feel like everyone’s so scared of turning 30, but maybe it’s not so bad. I mean, yeah I have to work out a lot more than I did when I was 18, but sometimes that’s ok because it’s like stress relief and I like to. Some days I would rather die than go run and yeah I’d really like to eat that donut or burrito without feeling like I gained ten pounds, but that’s how my brain works ok! I’m gonna feel kinda bad about it! I’ve already come to grips with the fact that I’m not 18 anymore, so I know I’m going to have to work out. I know my skin isn’t going to be the same! But 3 more years can’t be that bad. Getting older has to have just as many perks and pitfalls…so bring it on. Plus, at the risk of sounding conceited, people mistake me for being 5 or more years younger than I am and I’ll take it, with the age on my ID.

Anyway, I heard about this book a while ago and I really want to read it. 20130219-223621It’s by Glamour Magazine, so it has to be great right? They featured it not too long ago in their magazine and here are some great tips from it. I just thought I’d pass them along since it’s kind of along the lines of what I’ve been thinking a lot about lately and I loved the article!

By 30, you shave…

1. One old boyfriend you can imagine going back to and one who reminds you of how far you’ve come.

2. A decent piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in your family.

3. Something perfect to wear if the employer or man of your dreams wants to see you in an hour.

4. A purse, a suitcase, an umbrella you’re not ashamed to be seen carrying.

5. A youth you’re content to move beyond.

6.A past juicy enough that you’re looking forward to retelling it in your old age.

7. The realization that your actually going to have an old age – and some money set aside to help fund it.

8. An email address, a voice mailbox, and a bank account – all of which no one has access to but you.

9. A resume that is not even the slightest bit padded.

10. One friend who always makes you laugh and one who lets you cry.

11. A set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra.

12. Something ridiculously expensive that you bought for yourself, just because you deserve it.

13. The belief that you deserve it.

14. A skin-care regimen, an exercise routine, and a plan for dealing with those few facets of life that don’t get better after 30.

15. A solid start on a satisfying career, a satisfying relationship, and all those other facets of life that do get better after 30.

“…a sense of humor, especially when it comes to yourself.” – Lea Michele

“…a sharp tongue and the restraint to use it wisely.” – Lisa Leslie

By 30, you should know:

1. How to fall in love without losing yourself.

2. How you feel about having kids.

3. How to quit a job, break up with a man, and confront a friend without ruining the relationship.

4. When to try harder and when to walk away.

5. How to kiss in a way that communicates perfectly what you would and wouldn’t like to happen next.

6. The names of the secretary of state, your great-grandmothers, and the best tailor in town.

7. How to live alone, even if you don’t like to.

8. Where to go – be it your best friend’s kitchen table or a yoga mat – when your soul needs soothing.

9. That you can’t change the length of your legs, the width of your hips, or the nature of your parents.

10. The your childhood may not have been perfect, but it’s over.

11. What you would and wouldn’t do for money or love.

12. The nobody gets away with smoking, drinking, doing drugs, or not flossing for very long.

13. Who you can trust, who you can’t, and why you shouldn’t take it personally.

14. Not to apologize for something that isn’t your fault.

15. Why they say life begins at 30!

“…how to leave people happier than you found them.” – Rachel Roy

“…that even though not everything gets better after 30, you’ll be happier and more confident – so you won’t really care!” – Georgina Chapman

“…how to treat yourself so that your employers and romantic partners and friends and even your children know how and you want to be treated.” – Kimora Lee Simmons

So needless to say…I do think that a lot of these things are things that I have learned, am beginning to learn, and still need to work on. Some have been the hard way…some are pretty easy to understand, but I think most of them are definitely good ideas to remember.

A few things that I know at 27…

…I want to be a mom, for sure. hands down, however this works out in my life.

…not to try soooo hard.

…I can be risky with my clothes because they’re just clothes and if people don’t like them then o well!

…the difference between your “friends” and your friends.

…don’t let idiots ruin your day.

…moderation in all things.

…you have to stop comparing yourself to other people (yeah still working on this one!)

…don’t chase someone who doesn’t chase you back.

…don’t take your family for granted.

I’ve got a lot more to learn, but I can’t wait to read the book! and I hope when 30 comes it won’t be too scary 🙂 I think this year is gonna be a good year.

Polka Dot Wedding

My Uncle got married a few weeks ago, so my family came to town. (See previous post) The reception was at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building and it was really pretty. I wrote about it a little in the post I mentioned before, so I’ll just keep it short! This is what I wore…polka dots! One of my go-tos this spring 🙂

Dress – J.Crew; Shoes – Steven by Steve Madden; Necklace – J.Crew; Bracelet – J.Crew (similar here); Watch – Michael Kors (similar here); Ring – David Yurman.

As one of my friends said who also purchased these shoes…”Carrie Bradshaw would be proud”. Love these bows.

Family in Utah and Uncle’s Wedding

My family came up to Utah a few weeks ago for spring break and for my Uncle’s wedding. It’s always really good to see them because they live in California and I don’t get to see them very much. Adam is the only one who couldn’t come because of work :(. They got up here on a Friday night, so I met them after work at City Creek and we ate at Cheesecake Factory. Yum! These are just a bunch of pictures of Taylor and I being funny.

Saturday, my Uncle got married. That was fun because I got to see a bunch of my cousins and everyone.

Taylor and I.

My family.

The newlyweds. They left on bikes…so cute.

They had heart shaped sparklers, which I also thought was so cute!

My dad and I the next day at church.

Watching movies after dinner with Lydia. We watched Life of Pi, and the girls were so funny because they would all scream whenever they Tiger or the Hyena would pop out! You can just tell she’s totally nervous.

The Potter girls…love them!

Shopping at City Creek later in the week with Taylor!

I’m so sad my family is gone! I wish they could come up more!

So…you all know my love for a great crime show…well this one is a little different. It’s about a serial killer and his following that he gained while in prison. He based his killings on Edgar Allen Poe’s books. It’s crazy. All I can say is that you have to start watching. It’s intense. I’m literally obsessed. I’ve spent the last week catching up and I think there are about 5 more episodes to this first season. I’ve been watching at the gym on my ipad and I’m going to be so sad when I have to wait all summer for next season. I could have watched it all in one sitting, but I made myself spread it out. Anyway, it’s good so I highly recommend. It is a little graphic, because it’s about a serial killer, so there is that. But I was surprised because I do actually like Kevin Bacon in it.

Safe Haven

I kept going back and forth between if I liked the book or the movie better…which is weird because usually the book is always better. Maybe it’s because I saw the movie first so I knew how it would end, and because I saw this on Valentine’s Day and I just fell in love with it…plus Josh Duhamel is in it and it’s a little hard to compete with starring at him for two hours…:)

But here is my comparison…Maybe don’t read this if you haven’t seen the movie or read this because it might give things away rather than convince you to read or not read.

I will say this before you read on if you don’t want spoilers…I thought it was a good book and I’d totally recommend it. It’s not super cheesy like some of his books. Just like the movie. It has more suspense. After you read this you may think I hated the movie, but I totally loved it too, so don’t think that I hated it. The book and the movie were actually pretty different in the details, but had the same story.

1. Katie is way more careful in the book. She’s cautious and she thinks things over a lot. In the movie she jumps in faster…which could be just because it’s a two hour movie and they have to get things moving, but still.

2. In the book she actually plans how to escape from her husband for a long time. In the movie it doesn’t seem as planned, because she throws all of her things into a bag, runs to a neighbors house, and she stabs him, so you can’t tell if she killed him or what was going on for a while. You almost don’t even know if the officer is her husband or just a police officer trying to solve the case for a while into the movie. Maybe I was just confused and that was me. In the book she plans her escape for months and runs away from him, while he is out of town for a case.

3. In the book she explains to Alex about her past on her own, but in the movie he sees her wanted poster and gets mad etc. I guess maybe that was to make it more dramatic, but then all the sudden they’re like forgiving each other again etc.

4. The movie had the whole row boat on the lake in the rain again. Straight from the Notebook. This wasn’t even in the book. I thought it made Nicholas Sparks look unimaginative, but then it wasn’t even in the book and I realized that the movie people are the unimaginative ones.

5. I don’t really even remember how Kevin found her in the movie. He tracked down one of the buses somehow…which really kind of didn’t make sense, but in the book he found how she got a new identity, which was much more plausible. In the book, they explain his story more, and he is a good detective, so it’s more interesting on his side. I liked that at least we could see what was going on in his brain, even if he was a psycho.

6. I can’t decide if I liked Jo in the movie or book better. In both of them I wouldn’t have predicted the twist (except that I already knew for the book since I saw the movie first). I guess you get to know her better in the book because she’s in it more though. I like that she seems more a part of Katie’s life in the book.

So that’s my review.
